Tension Estimation Method for Cable With Damper Using Natural Frequencies With Uncertain Modal Order

In the maintenance of cable structures, such as cable-stayed bridges, it is necessary to estimate tension acting on cables. current Japanese practice, estimated from cable’s natural frequency using vibration-based methods. However, in recent years, dampers have been installed onto cables suppress aerodynamic vibrations. Because damper changes frequencies, methods used for without are not appropriate with dampers. With this background, authors previously proposed a method (Method 0F) estimating frequencies and their modal order. Method 0F partially ignores imaginary part complex simplify problem. This study proposes new 1F) that does ignore frequency. 1F still needs both order be input. If correctly specified, accuracy deteriorates. Therefore, 2F) only requires also proposed. The validity was confirmed by numerical simulations experiments. experimental verifications were superior compared previous methods, 2F has highest effectiveness.
